In mathematics, a moment is, loosely speaking, a quantitative measure of the shape of a set of points. The "second moment", for example, is widely used and measures the "width" (in a particular sense) of a set of points in one dimension or in higher dimensions measures the shape of a cloud of points as it could be fit by an ellipsoid. Other moments describe other aspects of a distribution such as how the distribution is skewed from its mean, or peaked. The mathematical concept is closely related to the concept of moment in physics, although moment in physics is often represented somewhat differently. Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.
Although new technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices in creating greener structures, the common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by

Green building brings together a vast array of practices and techniques to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on the environment and human health. It often emphasizes taking advantage of renewable resources, e.g., using sunlight through passive solar, active solar, and photovoltaic techniques and using plants and trees through green roofs, rain gardens, and for reduction of rainwater run-off. Many other techniques, such as using packed gravel or permeable concrete instead of conventional concrete or asphalt to enhance replenishment of ground water, are used as well.
While the practices, or technologies, employed in green building are constantly evolving and may differ from region to region, there are fundamental principles that persist from which the method is derived: Siting and Structure Design Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Materials Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality Enhancement, Operations and Maintenance Optimization, and Waste and Toxics Reduction. The essence of green building is an optimization of one or more of these principles. Also, with the proper synergistic design, individual green building technologies may work together to produce a greater cumulative effect.
On the aesthetic side of green architecture or sustainable design is the philosophy of designing a building that is in harmony with the natural features and resources surrounding the site. There are several key steps in designing sustainable buildings: specify 'green' building materials from local sources, reduce loads, optimize systems, and generate on-site renewable energy.

ครั้งหนึ่งพระองคุลีมาลเคยตั้งจิตปรารถนาไว้กับพระพุทธเจ้าในอดีตหลายพระองค์
ครั้งหนึ่งพระองคุลีมาลเคยตั้งจิตปรารถนาไว้กับพระพุทธเจ้าในอดีตหลายพระองค์แล้วคราวที่โลกว่างจากพระพุทธเจ้าคราวหนึ่งท่านได้พบพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าองค์หนึ่ง ครั้งนั้นท่านเกิดเป็นชาวนา เห็นพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าองค์หนึ่งเดินตากฝนผ่านมายังโรงนาแล้วเกิดความสงสารและเลื้อมใสจึงก่อไฟผิงถวายพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้า พระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้าผิงไฟแล้วหายหนาวกลับมากำลังแข็งแรง ท่านเห็นพระปัจเจกพุทธเจ้ามีอาการดีขึ้นจึงเกิดปีติโสมนัสบุญครั้งนั้นส่งผลให้ท่านเกิดมามีกำลังกายแข็งแรงเท่าช้าง ๗ เชือกในทุกชาติ ความแข็งแรงดังกล่าวมานี้ นอกจากจะเห็นได้ชัดในชาตินี้แล้ว ในชาติที่เกิดเป็นพระเจ้าพรหมทัตแห่งเมืองพาราณสีทรงเสวยเนื้อมนุษย์เป็นอาหารจนมีชื่อเรียกว่า“ โปริสาท”แปลว่า“ คนกินคน ”ในศาสนาของพระพุทธเจ้ากัสสปะ
เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าประทับอยู่ในพระเชตวันมหาวิหาร อยู่มาวันหนึ่งพระภิกษุทั้งหลายสนทนากันในธรรมสภาว่า เป็นที่น่าอัศจรรย์ยิ่งนัก พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงทรมานโจรองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายกลายเป็นดีขึ้นในพระพุทธศาสนาได้
พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าประทับอยู่ในพระคันธกุฏี ได้ทรงสดับสนทนาของพระภิกษุเหล่านั้น จึงเสด็จออกจากพระคันธกุฏีไปประทับ ณ ธรรมสภาแล้วตรัสถามว่า “ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอสทนากันถึงเรื่องอะไร” เมื่อพระภิกษุเหล่านั้นกราบทูลให้ทรงทราบ แล้วพระพุทธองค์จึงตรัสว่า “ ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตได้ทรมานองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายให้กลายมาเป็นดีไม่เฉพาะแต่ในบัดนี้เท่านั้น การที่ตถาคตทรมานให้สิ้นในบัดนี้เป็นการณ์ที่ไม่สู้จะอัศจรรย์นัก เพราะเหตุว่าตถาคตได้บรรลุพระปรมาภิเศกสัมโพธิญาณแล้ว ส่วนครั้งที่ตถาคตได้เคยทรมานองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายในอดีตชาตินั้น นับเป็นการอัศจรรย์ยิ่ง” ครั้นตรัสดังนี้แล้วพระองค์ก็ทรงนิ่งเฉยอยู่
พระภิกษุทั้งหลายต้องการจะฟังเรื่องในอดีตชาติของพระองคุลีมาลเถระ จึงพร้อมกันกราบทูลให้พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงนำเรื่องอดีตชาติมาตรัสเล่า
พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเล่าตรัสถึงเรื่องของพระองค์ที่เคยทรงบังเกิดเป็นพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้ทรงทรมานพระยาโปริสาทซึ่งเป็นอดีตชาติของพระองคุลีมาลเถระ
ในอดีตกาลพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมผู้ทรงเป็นราชโอรสของพระเจ้าโกรพย์กษัตริย์เมืองอินทปัต เมื่อทรงเจริญวัยได้ทรงเสด็จไปทรงศึกษาที่เมืองตักศิลาพร้อมกับพระเจ้าพรหมทัตพระราชโอรสของพระเจ้ากาสีกษัตริย์เมืองพาราณสี และทั้งสองพระองค์ได้ทรงปฏิญาณเป็นสหายกัน
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้ทรงเป็นหัวหน้าศิษย์ทั้งหลาย ซึ่งมีพระราชกุมารทั้งหมดถึง ๑๐๑ พระองค์ด้วยกัน เมื่อทรงศึกษาจบแล้ว ต่างก็เสด็จแยกย้ายกันกลับไปเสวยราชสืบสันตติวงศ์ในบ้านเมืองของแต่ละพระองค์ๆ
ในบรรดากษัตริย์ทั้งหมด มีพระเจ้าพรหมทัตทรงมีการเสวยที่แปลกคือ จะต้องเสวยเนื้อปิ้งเป็นประจำทุกวันขาดไม่ได้ บังเอิญวันหนึ่งพนักงานเครื่องต้นหาซื้อเนื้อไม่ได้ จึงไปเฉือนเอาเนื้อคนที่ตายใหม่ ๆ มาจากป่าช้ามาปิ้งนำขึ้นถวาย
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตเสวยแล้วทรงรู้สึกซาบซ่านไปทั่วเส้นเอ็นทั้ง ๗ พันเหตุที่เป็นดังนี้เพราะเคยเกิดเป็นยักษ์มาหลายชาติ จึงรับสั่งถามเจ้าพนักงานเครื้องต้นจนได้ความจริงว่าเป็นเนื้อมนุษย์ จึงตรัสสั่งให้เจ้าพนักงานหาเนื้อมนุษย์มาปิ้งถวายทุกวันโดยตรัสให้ฆ่านักโทษในเรือนจำจนในที่สุดนักโทษในเรือนจำก็หมดไปแล้วรับสั่งให้นำถุงทรัพย์ไปวางหลอกล่อไว้ถ้าใครจับถุงทรัพย์ที่วางดักเอาไว้เพราะคิดว่าของที่ผู้อื่นทำตกหล่นไว้ก็จะถูกฆ่า ครั้นกระทำนานเข้าเกิดข่าวลืออื้อฉาว กระทำไม่เป็นผลจึงรับสั่งให้ดักฆ่าคนในเวลาวิกาลเที้ยงคืนต่อไป
เมื่อบุคคลที่ถูกฆ่าตายหายสูญหายไปมากพวกพ่อแม่พี่น้องลูกหลานจึงพากันไปกราบบังคมทูลร้องทุกข์ต่อพระเจ้าพรหมทัตผู้ทรงเป็นต้นเหตุแต่พระองค์ไม่สนพระทัย ประชมชนเหล่านั้นจึงได้พากันไปร้องทุกข์แก่กาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีๆ รับจะช่วยจัดการให้
ต่อมากาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงส่งเจ้าหน้าที่ให้คอยเฝ้าสืบจับดูผู้ร้ายฆ่าคนให้ได้แล้วในไม่ช้าเจ้าหน้าที่ก็สามารถจับหญิงแม่ครัวคนหนึ่งกำลังแล่เนื้อคนตายใส่ในกระเช้า จึงนำมามอบแก่กาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีๆ ได้ถามคาดคั้นจนหญิงนั้นยอมรับว่า จะนำไปถวายแด่พระราชา จึงสั่งกำชับหญิงนั้นให้เข้าไปแถลงเรื่องนี้ในที่เฝ้าพระเจ้าอยู่หัวในวันพรุ่งนี้เช้า
ครั้นรุ่งเช้ากาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงนัดประชุมคณะอำมาตย์และชาวพระนครแล้วเอากระเช้าเนื้อผูกติดคอคนครัวนำเข้าสู่พระราชวัง
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตทอดพระเนตรทางช่องพระแกล ทรงเห็นพ่อครัวถูกคุมตัวมา ก็ทรงแน่พระทัยว่า เรื่องของเราปรากฏชัดออกมาแล้วแต่พยายามทรงดำรงพระสติไว้ให้มั่นไม่สะทกสะท้าน เมื่อเสนาบดีกราบบังคมทูลถามก็ตรัสรับสารภาพแล้วกาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงกราบทูลห้าม แต่ท้าวเธอทรงปฏิเสธว่าไม่สามารถปฏิบัติตามได้ทั้ง ๆ ที่เสนาบดีและพระราชาต่างฝ่ายยกเอาเรื่องอดีตมาเป็นข้ออ้าง ซึ่งเป็นตัวอย่างให้มองเห็นถึงความพินาศ
ในที่สุดพระเจ้าพรหมทัตตรัสปฏิเสธว่าอดไม่ได้แม้จะถูกเนรเทศก็ยอม แต่ตรัสขอดาบ ๑ เล่มภาชนะ ๑ ใบกระเช้า ๑ใบ กับพ่อครัวเครื่องต้น ๑ คนกาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีและพวกชาวเมืองยินดีมอบให้ตามที่ตรัสขอแล้วเนรเทศเสียจากบ้านเมือง
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตกับพ่อครัวออกจากเมืองไปพักอยู่ที่ต้นไทรต้นหนึ่งคอยดักฆ่าคนเดินทางที่ผ่านไปมา แล้วนำมาให้พ่อครัวทำการต้มกินด้วยกัน เวลาพระเจ้าพรหมทัตจะทรงจับมนุษย์จะทรงเปล่งพระสุรเสียงขึ้นว่าเราเป็นมนุษย์กินคนชื่อ “ โปริสาท ”
มาวันหนึ่งพระยาโปริสาทหาฆ่าคนทำอาหารไม่ได้ จึงได้ฆ่าพ่อครัวเครื่องต้นนั้นทำอาหารและต่อมามีข่าวเลื่องลือว่าพระยาโปริสาทกินคนได้กระจายไปทั่วชมพูทวีป
ครั้งนั้นมีพ่อค้าเกวียนคนหนึ่งนำกองเกียน๕๐๐เล่มไปค้าขายแต่พอจะเข้าสู่ป่าปากดงนึกกลัวพระยาโปริสาทจึงว่าจ้างพวกที่อยู่ปากป่าดงด้วยเงิน ๑,๐๐๐กหาปณะเพื่อให้ช่วยส่งข้ามพ้นดงไป
พวกที่อยู่ปากป่าดงตกลงและได้ชักชวนพวกพ้องไปด้วยกันหลายคนพร้อมทั้งเตรียมอาวุธครบมือ โดยให้กองเกวียนไปข้างหน้า พวกตนตามไปข้างหลัง ส่วนหัวหน้าพ่อค้านั่งไปบนยานน้อยเทียมด้วยโคเผือก มีพวกคุ้มกันอยู่ข้างหน้าและข้างหลัง
ครั้นพระยาโปริสาทขึ้นบนต้นไม้คอยตรวจดูอยู่ พอเห็นหัวหน้าพ่อค้าให้นึกอยากกินจนน้ำลายไหลพอหัวหน้าพ่อค้าเข้ามาใกล้จึงลงจากต้นไม้ร้องตะโกนว่า“เราคือพระยาโปริสาทๆๆ ”แล้วเกว่งดาบวิ่งรี่เข้าจับหัวหน้าพ่อค้านั้นแบกไป
พวกรับจ้างได้ไล่ติดตามไป และบุรุษผู้กล้าแข็งคนหนึ่งวิ่งไปทันพระยาโปริสาทเห็นจวนตัวจึงกระโดดข้ามรั้วแห่งหนึ่ง ถึงคราวเคราะห์ร้อยของพระยาโปริสาท เท้าเหยียบเอาตอไม้ตะเคียนจนทะลุถึงหลังเท้าเลือดไหลโทรม เมื่อเห็นว่าหนีไม่พ้นจึงปล่อยหัวหน้าพ่อค้าเพื่อหนีเอาตัวรอดก่อน พวกคุ้มกันจึงได้หัวหน้าพ่อค้ากลับมายังกองเกวียน
ฝ่านพระยาโปริสาทกลับไปที่พักของตนแล้วได้บนต่อเทวดาว่า“ ถ้าช่วยทำแผลที่เท้าให้หายได้ภายใน ๗ วัน จะเอาเลือดกษัตริย์ ๑๐๑ พระองค์มาล้างต้นไทรของท่านเอาไส้กษัตริย์เหล่านั้นวงเป็นสายสิญจน์ และจะเอาเนื้อกษัตริย์เหล่านั้นบวงสรวงท่าน”หลังจากบนแล้ว ๗ วันก็ไม่ได้ออกไปหาอาหารกินเลย อดอาหารจนกายซูบผอม เป็นเหตุให้แผลหายภายใน๗ วัน พระยาปริสาทเข้าใจว่าหายด้วยอำนาจของเทวดาแล้วออกไปหากินคนอีกจนมีกำลังแข็งแรงดีได้ถือเอาดาบออกจากต้นไทรไปหวังจะจับกษัตริย์ ๑๐๑ พระองค์มาแก้บนเทวดา เผอิญไปพบยักษ์สหายเก่าเข้า จึงได้ขอเรียนมนต์เพื่อช่วยให้วิ่งเร็วและมีกำลังมาก
เพราะฉนั้นพระพญาโปริสาทจึงสามารถจับกษัตริย์ในชมพูทวีบมาได้ ๑๐๐ พระองค์ ภายในเวลาเพียง ๗วัน ยังคงเหลือแต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม ที่เว้นไว้เพราะยังนึกถึงบุญคุณที่เคยแนะนำสมัยเรียนอยู่ที่เมืองตักศิลาด้วยกัน อีกอย่างหนึ่งทรงเห็นว่า ควรเหลือไว้เป็นพืชพันธุ์ของกษัตริย์ต่อไปแล้วพระยาโปริสาทก็จัดการเจาะมือกษัตริย์ทั้งหมดร้อยเชือกแขวนไว้ที่กิ่งไทร พอให้ปลายเท้าจรดถึงพื้นดินเท้านั้น แล้วก่อไฟเตรียมแหลนเพื่อจะเสียบกษัตริย์เหล่านั้นย่างแก้บนรุกขเทวดา
รุกขเทวดารู้สึกสลดใจแต่ไม่อาจห้ามได้ จึงขึ้นไปบอกแก่ท้าวจาตุมหาราชๆ ก็ไม่อาจห้ามได้จึงได้ขึ้นไปหาพระอินทร์ๆ ตรัสว่า “ ถึงตัวเราก็ห้ามไม่ได้ ๆ แต่ได้ตรัสอุบายให้ว่า “ ท่านจงแปลงเป็นสมณะเดินผ่านหน้าพระยาโปริสาทไป เมื่อพระยาโปริสาทไต่ถามท่าน ๆ จงกลายร่างเป็นเทวดาแล้วบอกให้ทราบว่า ท่านเป็นเทวดาสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไทรผู้ที่ท่านจะบวงสรวงนั้นแต่เราไม่พอใจการเซ่นสรวงของท่านผู้กล่าวเท็จ เพราะบนไว้ว่าจะนำกษัตริย์๑๐๑ พระองค์มาแก้บนแต่ท่านนำมาเพียง ๑๐๐พระองค์เท่านั้นเอง ถ้าหากท่านไม่ไปนำพระเจ้าสุตโสมมา การบวงสรวงนี้นับว่าใช้ไม่ได้เมื่อพระยาโปริสาทรับปากว่าจะนำพระเจ้าสุตโสมมา ท่านจงเข้าไปในต้นไทรตามเดิม แล้วจากนั้นพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจักทรมานพระยาโปริสาทให้ละพยศร้ายทั้งจะช่วยชีวิตของกระษัตริย์ทั้ง ๑๐๐ พระองค์เหล่านั้นด้วยตลอดกระทั้งคนอื่นๆอีกด้วย ”
เมื่อรุกขเทวดารับราชโองการแล้วจึงรีบลงมาปฏิบัติตามทุกประการทันทีฝ่ายพระยาโปริสาทรับว่า จะไปนำพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมมา แล้วไปคอยดักอยู่ในสระโบกขรณี สำหรับสรงของพระเจ้าสุตโสมในตอนกลางคืน
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมพร้อมด้วยจตุรงคเสนาเสด็จยาตราออกจากพระนครได้พบกับอานันทพราหมณ์ผู้นำคาถาอันมีค่า ๑๐๐ กหาปณะมาจากเมืองตักกศิลาเพื่อแสดงถวายพระองค์ ๆ รับสั่งว่า รอให้เสด็จกลับเสียก่อนจึงจะฟังแล้วเลยเสด็จไปยังพระราชอุทยาน โดยมีพวกพลโยธาแวดล้อมอย่างกวดขันพอได้เวลาพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจึงเสด็จลงสรงสนานในสระโบกขรณีแล้วเสด็จขึ้นมาประทับมงคลศิลาอาสน์
ขณะที่พวกเจ้าพนักงานเครื่องต้นจะน้อมเครื่องทรงเข้าไปถวาย พระยาโปริสาทได้ส่งเสียงร้องขึ้นว่า “เราคือ พระยาโปริสาทๆๆ” แล้วกระโดดขึ้นจากสระ วิ่งตรงเข้าไปจับที่เท้าของพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมยกขึ้นบ่าแบกไปอย่างรวดเร็ว โดยไม่มีใครจะสามารถไล่ตามทัน
ครั้นไปได้ไกลประมาณ ๓ โยชน์ พระยาโปริสาทก็ค่อยๆเดินไป แต่สังเกตเห็นว่าน้ำพระเนตรของพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตกลงมาถูกอกของตนด้วยเข้าใจว่า พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงกรรแสง จึงทูลถามเหตุที่ทรงกรรแสง
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสว่า “ เหตุที่ร้องให้มิใช่กลัวตาย แต่เสียดายที่ยังไม่ได้ยินคาถาอันมีค่า ๑๐๐ กหาปณะที่นัดไว้กับอานันทพราหมณ์ต้องการจะขออนุญาตกลับไปฟังคาถานั้นแล้วจะกลับมาให้ท่านกิน”แต่พระยาโปริสาทไม่เชื่อพระองค์จึงต้องชี้แจงเหตุผลพร้อมทั้งตรัสคำสาบานพระยาโปริสาทจึงอนุญาตให้พระเจ้าสุตโสมกลับไปฟังถาคาที่พระองค์ทรงตั้งพระทัยไว้
เมื่อพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมเสด็จกลับมาแล้วจึงได้ตรัสเล่าเรื่องทั้งหมดให้พวกพลโยธาฟังแล้วเสด็จเข้าสู่พระนครพอเสด็จถึงพระนครมีพระบรมราชโองการให้อานันทพราหมณ์เข้าเฝ้ากล่าวคาถาของพระกัสสปสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าให้ทรงสดับพอพระองค์ทรงสดับจบแล้วทรงเลื่อมใสได้บูชาด้วยพระราชทรัพย์ ๔,๐๐๐ ตำลึงพร้อมกับยวดยานพาหนะแก่อานันทพราหมณ์ แล้วเสด็จเข้าเฝ้าพระชนกชนนี ๆทรงกริ้วว่า ไม่ควรบูชาด้วยพระราชทรัพย์มากปานนั้น จึงทูลว่าถ้าทรงเสียดายพระราชทรัพย์ก็ดีแล้วเพราะกระหม่อมได้ปฏิญาณไว้ว่าจะกลับไปให้พระยาโปริสาทฆ่ากินเป็นอาหาร
พระชนกชนนีทรงเสียพระตกทัยทรงห้ามและทรงรับอาสาจะยกทัพไปจับพระยาโปริสาท แต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงเล่าเรื่องให้ทรงสดับโดยตลอดแล้วทูลลาพระชนกชนนีไปแต่ลำพัง ไม่ทรงยอมให้ใครติดตามไปด้วยเลย
เช้าวันนั้นพระยาโปริสาทคิดว่า“ถึงพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมสหายเก่าของเราจะมาหรือไม่มาถึงเทวดาจะลงโทษเราอย่างไรก็ช่างเราจะบูชาเทวดาให้เสร็จเสียที ”
ในทันใดนั้นเอง พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้เสด็จมาถึง พระยาโปริสาทดีใจยิ่งนัก จึงถามว่า “ท่านฟังคาถามาแล้วหรือ” พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสตอบว่า “เราได้ฟังมาแล้ว และได้บูชาพรามณ์ ทั้งได้จัดการบ้านเมืองเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้วเชิญท่านกินเราเถิด”
พระยาโปริสาทเห็นพระเจ้าสุตโสมไม่ทรงหวาดกลัว จึงสำคัญว่าคงเป็นเพราะพระคาถานั้นเอง “พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจึงมิได้ประหวั่นหวาดกลัวต่อความตายที่อยู่ข้างหน้าเราจักต้องขอฟังคาถาบ้าง” แล้วจึงขอให้พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงแสดงให้ฟัง
แต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสปฏิเสธว่าจะไม่แสดงแก่คนประพฤติไม่ชอบธรรม แล้วทรงบอกให้พระยาโปริสาทกินพระองค์เสีย
พระยาโปริสาทไม่กล้ากินพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม เพราะกลัวแผ่นดินสูบจึงทูลให้พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมแสดงคาถาทั้ง๔ ให้ฟัง และเมื่อได้ฟังแล้วเกิดความเลื่อมใส จึงขอถวายพร๔ อย่าง ให้พระเจ้าสุตโสมทรงเลือกตามพระราชประสงค์
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงขอพร ๔ ข้อ คือ
๑ ขอให้อายุยืนได้ ๑๐๐ ปี โดยปราศจากโรคภัย
๒ ขออย่าได้กินพระเจ้าแผ่นดินในชมพูทวีปทั้งสิ้นนี้เลย
๓ จงปล่อยพระเจ้าแผ่นดินเหล่านี้ กลับไปยังประเทศของพระองค์
๔ ขออย่ากินเนื้อมนุษย์อีกต่อไป
พระยาโปริสาทยินดีถวายเฉพาะ ๓ ข้อข้างต้น ส่วนข้อที่ ๔ไม่ยอมถวายให้ขอเปลี่ยนเป็นอย่างอื่น แต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมไม่ทรงยินยอม แล้วทรงแสดงธรรมให้พระยาโปริสาทฟังอีก พระยาโปริสาทจึงยอมถวายพรข้อที่ ๔ และให้พระยาโปริสาทรักษาศีล๕ ทั้งให้ปล่อยกษัตริย์ทั้งหลายกลับไป
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงพาพระยาโปริสาทแวะที่เมืองพาราณสีของพระยาโปริสาทก่อนแต่พอไปถึงเมือง นายประตูรีบปิดประตูเสียก่อนด้วยความกลัว พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม จึงทรงชี้แจงให้ทราบว่าบัดนี้พระยาโปริสาทหรือพระเจ้าพรหมทัต ได้กลับเป็นคนดีแล้ว ขอได้เปิดประตูเถิด ในทันใดนั้นประตูเมืองก็ถูกเปิดออกพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมพร้อมด้วยอำมาตย์ ๒ -๓คน จึงเสด็จเข้าไปทรงชี้แจงให้ชาวเมืองและพระราชโอรสของพระยาโปริสาททราบโดยตลอดแล้วอัญเชิญพระยาโปริสาท หรือพระเจ้าพรหมทัตขึ้นเสวยราชสมบัติในกรุงพาราณสีสืบต่อไป
เมื่อพระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าประทับอยู่ในพระเชตวันมหาวิหาร อยู่มาวันหนึ่งพระภิกษุทั้งหลายสนทนากันในธรรมสภาว่า เป็นที่น่าอัศจรรย์ยิ่งนัก พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงทรมานโจรองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายกลายเป็นดีขึ้นในพระพุทธศาสนาได้
พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าประทับอยู่ในพระคันธกุฏี ได้ทรงสดับสนทนาของพระภิกษุเหล่านั้น จึงเสด็จออกจากพระคันธกุฏีไปประทับ ณ ธรรมสภาแล้วตรัสถามว่า “ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอสทนากันถึงเรื่องอะไร” เมื่อพระภิกษุเหล่านั้นกราบทูลให้ทรงทราบ แล้วพระพุทธองค์จึงตรัสว่า “ ดูก่อนภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตถาคตได้ทรมานองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายให้กลายมาเป็นดีไม่เฉพาะแต่ในบัดนี้เท่านั้น การที่ตถาคตทรมานให้สิ้นในบัดนี้เป็นการณ์ที่ไม่สู้จะอัศจรรย์นัก เพราะเหตุว่าตถาคตได้บรรลุพระปรมาภิเศกสัมโพธิญาณแล้ว ส่วนครั้งที่ตถาคตได้เคยทรมานองคุลีมาลให้หมดพยศร้ายในอดีตชาตินั้น นับเป็นการอัศจรรย์ยิ่ง” ครั้นตรัสดังนี้แล้วพระองค์ก็ทรงนิ่งเฉยอยู่
พระภิกษุทั้งหลายต้องการจะฟังเรื่องในอดีตชาติของพระองคุลีมาลเถระ จึงพร้อมกันกราบทูลให้พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าทรงนำเรื่องอดีตชาติมาตรัสเล่า
พระผู้มีพระภาคเจ้าเล่าตรัสถึงเรื่องของพระองค์ที่เคยทรงบังเกิดเป็นพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้ทรงทรมานพระยาโปริสาทซึ่งเป็นอดีตชาติของพระองคุลีมาลเถระ
ในอดีตกาลพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมผู้ทรงเป็นราชโอรสของพระเจ้าโกรพย์กษัตริย์เมืองอินทปัต เมื่อทรงเจริญวัยได้ทรงเสด็จไปทรงศึกษาที่เมืองตักศิลาพร้อมกับพระเจ้าพรหมทัตพระราชโอรสของพระเจ้ากาสีกษัตริย์เมืองพาราณสี และทั้งสองพระองค์ได้ทรงปฏิญาณเป็นสหายกัน
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้ทรงเป็นหัวหน้าศิษย์ทั้งหลาย ซึ่งมีพระราชกุมารทั้งหมดถึง ๑๐๑ พระองค์ด้วยกัน เมื่อทรงศึกษาจบแล้ว ต่างก็เสด็จแยกย้ายกันกลับไปเสวยราชสืบสันตติวงศ์ในบ้านเมืองของแต่ละพระองค์ๆ
ในบรรดากษัตริย์ทั้งหมด มีพระเจ้าพรหมทัตทรงมีการเสวยที่แปลกคือ จะต้องเสวยเนื้อปิ้งเป็นประจำทุกวันขาดไม่ได้ บังเอิญวันหนึ่งพนักงานเครื่องต้นหาซื้อเนื้อไม่ได้ จึงไปเฉือนเอาเนื้อคนที่ตายใหม่ ๆ มาจากป่าช้ามาปิ้งนำขึ้นถวาย
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตเสวยแล้วทรงรู้สึกซาบซ่านไปทั่วเส้นเอ็นทั้ง ๗ พันเหตุที่เป็นดังนี้เพราะเคยเกิดเป็นยักษ์มาหลายชาติ จึงรับสั่งถามเจ้าพนักงานเครื้องต้นจนได้ความจริงว่าเป็นเนื้อมนุษย์ จึงตรัสสั่งให้เจ้าพนักงานหาเนื้อมนุษย์มาปิ้งถวายทุกวันโดยตรัสให้ฆ่านักโทษในเรือนจำจนในที่สุดนักโทษในเรือนจำก็หมดไปแล้วรับสั่งให้นำถุงทรัพย์ไปวางหลอกล่อไว้ถ้าใครจับถุงทรัพย์ที่วางดักเอาไว้เพราะคิดว่าของที่ผู้อื่นทำตกหล่นไว้ก็จะถูกฆ่า ครั้นกระทำนานเข้าเกิดข่าวลืออื้อฉาว กระทำไม่เป็นผลจึงรับสั่งให้ดักฆ่าคนในเวลาวิกาลเที้ยงคืนต่อไป
เมื่อบุคคลที่ถูกฆ่าตายหายสูญหายไปมากพวกพ่อแม่พี่น้องลูกหลานจึงพากันไปกราบบังคมทูลร้องทุกข์ต่อพระเจ้าพรหมทัตผู้ทรงเป็นต้นเหตุแต่พระองค์ไม่สนพระทัย ประชมชนเหล่านั้นจึงได้พากันไปร้องทุกข์แก่กาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีๆ รับจะช่วยจัดการให้
ต่อมากาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงส่งเจ้าหน้าที่ให้คอยเฝ้าสืบจับดูผู้ร้ายฆ่าคนให้ได้แล้วในไม่ช้าเจ้าหน้าที่ก็สามารถจับหญิงแม่ครัวคนหนึ่งกำลังแล่เนื้อคนตายใส่ในกระเช้า จึงนำมามอบแก่กาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีๆ ได้ถามคาดคั้นจนหญิงนั้นยอมรับว่า จะนำไปถวายแด่พระราชา จึงสั่งกำชับหญิงนั้นให้เข้าไปแถลงเรื่องนี้ในที่เฝ้าพระเจ้าอยู่หัวในวันพรุ่งนี้เช้า
ครั้นรุ่งเช้ากาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงนัดประชุมคณะอำมาตย์และชาวพระนครแล้วเอากระเช้าเนื้อผูกติดคอคนครัวนำเข้าสู่พระราชวัง
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตทอดพระเนตรทางช่องพระแกล ทรงเห็นพ่อครัวถูกคุมตัวมา ก็ทรงแน่พระทัยว่า เรื่องของเราปรากฏชัดออกมาแล้วแต่พยายามทรงดำรงพระสติไว้ให้มั่นไม่สะทกสะท้าน เมื่อเสนาบดีกราบบังคมทูลถามก็ตรัสรับสารภาพแล้วกาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีจึงกราบทูลห้าม แต่ท้าวเธอทรงปฏิเสธว่าไม่สามารถปฏิบัติตามได้ทั้ง ๆ ที่เสนาบดีและพระราชาต่างฝ่ายยกเอาเรื่องอดีตมาเป็นข้ออ้าง ซึ่งเป็นตัวอย่างให้มองเห็นถึงความพินาศ
ในที่สุดพระเจ้าพรหมทัตตรัสปฏิเสธว่าอดไม่ได้แม้จะถูกเนรเทศก็ยอม แต่ตรัสขอดาบ ๑ เล่มภาชนะ ๑ ใบกระเช้า ๑ใบ กับพ่อครัวเครื่องต้น ๑ คนกาฬหัตถีเสนาบดีและพวกชาวเมืองยินดีมอบให้ตามที่ตรัสขอแล้วเนรเทศเสียจากบ้านเมือง
พระเจ้าพรหมทัตกับพ่อครัวออกจากเมืองไปพักอยู่ที่ต้นไทรต้นหนึ่งคอยดักฆ่าคนเดินทางที่ผ่านไปมา แล้วนำมาให้พ่อครัวทำการต้มกินด้วยกัน เวลาพระเจ้าพรหมทัตจะทรงจับมนุษย์จะทรงเปล่งพระสุรเสียงขึ้นว่าเราเป็นมนุษย์กินคนชื่อ “ โปริสาท ”
มาวันหนึ่งพระยาโปริสาทหาฆ่าคนทำอาหารไม่ได้ จึงได้ฆ่าพ่อครัวเครื่องต้นนั้นทำอาหารและต่อมามีข่าวเลื่องลือว่าพระยาโปริสาทกินคนได้กระจายไปทั่วชมพูทวีป
ครั้งนั้นมีพ่อค้าเกวียนคนหนึ่งนำกองเกียน๕๐๐เล่มไปค้าขายแต่พอจะเข้าสู่ป่าปากดงนึกกลัวพระยาโปริสาทจึงว่าจ้างพวกที่อยู่ปากป่าดงด้วยเงิน ๑,๐๐๐กหาปณะเพื่อให้ช่วยส่งข้ามพ้นดงไป
พวกที่อยู่ปากป่าดงตกลงและได้ชักชวนพวกพ้องไปด้วยกันหลายคนพร้อมทั้งเตรียมอาวุธครบมือ โดยให้กองเกวียนไปข้างหน้า พวกตนตามไปข้างหลัง ส่วนหัวหน้าพ่อค้านั่งไปบนยานน้อยเทียมด้วยโคเผือก มีพวกคุ้มกันอยู่ข้างหน้าและข้างหลัง
ครั้นพระยาโปริสาทขึ้นบนต้นไม้คอยตรวจดูอยู่ พอเห็นหัวหน้าพ่อค้าให้นึกอยากกินจนน้ำลายไหลพอหัวหน้าพ่อค้าเข้ามาใกล้จึงลงจากต้นไม้ร้องตะโกนว่า“เราคือพระยาโปริสาทๆๆ ”แล้วเกว่งดาบวิ่งรี่เข้าจับหัวหน้าพ่อค้านั้นแบกไป
พวกรับจ้างได้ไล่ติดตามไป และบุรุษผู้กล้าแข็งคนหนึ่งวิ่งไปทันพระยาโปริสาทเห็นจวนตัวจึงกระโดดข้ามรั้วแห่งหนึ่ง ถึงคราวเคราะห์ร้อยของพระยาโปริสาท เท้าเหยียบเอาตอไม้ตะเคียนจนทะลุถึงหลังเท้าเลือดไหลโทรม เมื่อเห็นว่าหนีไม่พ้นจึงปล่อยหัวหน้าพ่อค้าเพื่อหนีเอาตัวรอดก่อน พวกคุ้มกันจึงได้หัวหน้าพ่อค้ากลับมายังกองเกวียน
ฝ่านพระยาโปริสาทกลับไปที่พักของตนแล้วได้บนต่อเทวดาว่า“ ถ้าช่วยทำแผลที่เท้าให้หายได้ภายใน ๗ วัน จะเอาเลือดกษัตริย์ ๑๐๑ พระองค์มาล้างต้นไทรของท่านเอาไส้กษัตริย์เหล่านั้นวงเป็นสายสิญจน์ และจะเอาเนื้อกษัตริย์เหล่านั้นบวงสรวงท่าน”หลังจากบนแล้ว ๗ วันก็ไม่ได้ออกไปหาอาหารกินเลย อดอาหารจนกายซูบผอม เป็นเหตุให้แผลหายภายใน๗ วัน พระยาปริสาทเข้าใจว่าหายด้วยอำนาจของเทวดาแล้วออกไปหากินคนอีกจนมีกำลังแข็งแรงดีได้ถือเอาดาบออกจากต้นไทรไปหวังจะจับกษัตริย์ ๑๐๑ พระองค์มาแก้บนเทวดา เผอิญไปพบยักษ์สหายเก่าเข้า จึงได้ขอเรียนมนต์เพื่อช่วยให้วิ่งเร็วและมีกำลังมาก
เพราะฉนั้นพระพญาโปริสาทจึงสามารถจับกษัตริย์ในชมพูทวีบมาได้ ๑๐๐ พระองค์ ภายในเวลาเพียง ๗วัน ยังคงเหลือแต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม ที่เว้นไว้เพราะยังนึกถึงบุญคุณที่เคยแนะนำสมัยเรียนอยู่ที่เมืองตักศิลาด้วยกัน อีกอย่างหนึ่งทรงเห็นว่า ควรเหลือไว้เป็นพืชพันธุ์ของกษัตริย์ต่อไปแล้วพระยาโปริสาทก็จัดการเจาะมือกษัตริย์ทั้งหมดร้อยเชือกแขวนไว้ที่กิ่งไทร พอให้ปลายเท้าจรดถึงพื้นดินเท้านั้น แล้วก่อไฟเตรียมแหลนเพื่อจะเสียบกษัตริย์เหล่านั้นย่างแก้บนรุกขเทวดา
รุกขเทวดารู้สึกสลดใจแต่ไม่อาจห้ามได้ จึงขึ้นไปบอกแก่ท้าวจาตุมหาราชๆ ก็ไม่อาจห้ามได้จึงได้ขึ้นไปหาพระอินทร์ๆ ตรัสว่า “ ถึงตัวเราก็ห้ามไม่ได้ ๆ แต่ได้ตรัสอุบายให้ว่า “ ท่านจงแปลงเป็นสมณะเดินผ่านหน้าพระยาโปริสาทไป เมื่อพระยาโปริสาทไต่ถามท่าน ๆ จงกลายร่างเป็นเทวดาแล้วบอกให้ทราบว่า ท่านเป็นเทวดาสิงอยู่ที่ต้นไทรผู้ที่ท่านจะบวงสรวงนั้นแต่เราไม่พอใจการเซ่นสรวงของท่านผู้กล่าวเท็จ เพราะบนไว้ว่าจะนำกษัตริย์๑๐๑ พระองค์มาแก้บนแต่ท่านนำมาเพียง ๑๐๐พระองค์เท่านั้นเอง ถ้าหากท่านไม่ไปนำพระเจ้าสุตโสมมา การบวงสรวงนี้นับว่าใช้ไม่ได้เมื่อพระยาโปริสาทรับปากว่าจะนำพระเจ้าสุตโสมมา ท่านจงเข้าไปในต้นไทรตามเดิม แล้วจากนั้นพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจักทรมานพระยาโปริสาทให้ละพยศร้ายทั้งจะช่วยชีวิตของกระษัตริย์ทั้ง ๑๐๐ พระองค์เหล่านั้นด้วยตลอดกระทั้งคนอื่นๆอีกด้วย ”
เมื่อรุกขเทวดารับราชโองการแล้วจึงรีบลงมาปฏิบัติตามทุกประการทันทีฝ่ายพระยาโปริสาทรับว่า จะไปนำพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมมา แล้วไปคอยดักอยู่ในสระโบกขรณี สำหรับสรงของพระเจ้าสุตโสมในตอนกลางคืน
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมพร้อมด้วยจตุรงคเสนาเสด็จยาตราออกจากพระนครได้พบกับอานันทพราหมณ์ผู้นำคาถาอันมีค่า ๑๐๐ กหาปณะมาจากเมืองตักกศิลาเพื่อแสดงถวายพระองค์ ๆ รับสั่งว่า รอให้เสด็จกลับเสียก่อนจึงจะฟังแล้วเลยเสด็จไปยังพระราชอุทยาน โดยมีพวกพลโยธาแวดล้อมอย่างกวดขันพอได้เวลาพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจึงเสด็จลงสรงสนานในสระโบกขรณีแล้วเสด็จขึ้นมาประทับมงคลศิลาอาสน์
ขณะที่พวกเจ้าพนักงานเครื่องต้นจะน้อมเครื่องทรงเข้าไปถวาย พระยาโปริสาทได้ส่งเสียงร้องขึ้นว่า “เราคือ พระยาโปริสาทๆๆ” แล้วกระโดดขึ้นจากสระ วิ่งตรงเข้าไปจับที่เท้าของพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมยกขึ้นบ่าแบกไปอย่างรวดเร็ว โดยไม่มีใครจะสามารถไล่ตามทัน
ครั้นไปได้ไกลประมาณ ๓ โยชน์ พระยาโปริสาทก็ค่อยๆเดินไป แต่สังเกตเห็นว่าน้ำพระเนตรของพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตกลงมาถูกอกของตนด้วยเข้าใจว่า พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงกรรแสง จึงทูลถามเหตุที่ทรงกรรแสง
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสว่า “ เหตุที่ร้องให้มิใช่กลัวตาย แต่เสียดายที่ยังไม่ได้ยินคาถาอันมีค่า ๑๐๐ กหาปณะที่นัดไว้กับอานันทพราหมณ์ต้องการจะขออนุญาตกลับไปฟังคาถานั้นแล้วจะกลับมาให้ท่านกิน”แต่พระยาโปริสาทไม่เชื่อพระองค์จึงต้องชี้แจงเหตุผลพร้อมทั้งตรัสคำสาบานพระยาโปริสาทจึงอนุญาตให้พระเจ้าสุตโสมกลับไปฟังถาคาที่พระองค์ทรงตั้งพระทัยไว้

เช้าวันนั้นพระยาโปริสาทคิดว่า“ถึงพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมสหายเก่าของเราจะมาหรือไม่มาถึงเทวดาจะลงโทษเราอย่างไรก็ช่างเราจะบูชาเทวดาให้เสร็จเสียที ”
ในทันใดนั้นเอง พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมได้เสด็จมาถึง พระยาโปริสาทดีใจยิ่งนัก จึงถามว่า “ท่านฟังคาถามาแล้วหรือ” พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสตอบว่า “เราได้ฟังมาแล้ว และได้บูชาพรามณ์ ทั้งได้จัดการบ้านเมืองเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้วเชิญท่านกินเราเถิด”
พระยาโปริสาทเห็นพระเจ้าสุตโสมไม่ทรงหวาดกลัว จึงสำคัญว่าคงเป็นเพราะพระคาถานั้นเอง “พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมจึงมิได้ประหวั่นหวาดกลัวต่อความตายที่อยู่ข้างหน้าเราจักต้องขอฟังคาถาบ้าง” แล้วจึงขอให้พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงแสดงให้ฟัง
แต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมตรัสปฏิเสธว่าจะไม่แสดงแก่คนประพฤติไม่ชอบธรรม แล้วทรงบอกให้พระยาโปริสาทกินพระองค์เสีย
พระยาโปริสาทไม่กล้ากินพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม เพราะกลัวแผ่นดินสูบจึงทูลให้พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมแสดงคาถาทั้ง๔ ให้ฟัง และเมื่อได้ฟังแล้วเกิดความเลื่อมใส จึงขอถวายพร๔ อย่าง ให้พระเจ้าสุตโสมทรงเลือกตามพระราชประสงค์
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงขอพร ๔ ข้อ คือ
๑ ขอให้อายุยืนได้ ๑๐๐ ปี โดยปราศจากโรคภัย
๒ ขออย่าได้กินพระเจ้าแผ่นดินในชมพูทวีปทั้งสิ้นนี้เลย
๓ จงปล่อยพระเจ้าแผ่นดินเหล่านี้ กลับไปยังประเทศของพระองค์
๔ ขออย่ากินเนื้อมนุษย์อีกต่อไป
พระยาโปริสาทยินดีถวายเฉพาะ ๓ ข้อข้างต้น ส่วนข้อที่ ๔ไม่ยอมถวายให้ขอเปลี่ยนเป็นอย่างอื่น แต่พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมไม่ทรงยินยอม แล้วทรงแสดงธรรมให้พระยาโปริสาทฟังอีก พระยาโปริสาทจึงยอมถวายพรข้อที่ ๔ และให้พระยาโปริสาทรักษาศีล๕ ทั้งให้ปล่อยกษัตริย์ทั้งหลายกลับไป
พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมทรงพาพระยาโปริสาทแวะที่เมืองพาราณสีของพระยาโปริสาทก่อนแต่พอไปถึงเมือง นายประตูรีบปิดประตูเสียก่อนด้วยความกลัว พระเจ้ามหาสุตโสม จึงทรงชี้แจงให้ทราบว่าบัดนี้พระยาโปริสาทหรือพระเจ้าพรหมทัต ได้กลับเป็นคนดีแล้ว ขอได้เปิดประตูเถิด ในทันใดนั้นประตูเมืองก็ถูกเปิดออกพระเจ้ามหาสุตโสมพร้อมด้วยอำมาตย์ ๒ -๓คน จึงเสด็จเข้าไปทรงชี้แจงให้ชาวเมืองและพระราชโอรสของพระยาโปริสาททราบโดยตลอดแล้วอัญเชิญพระยาโปริสาท หรือพระเจ้าพรหมทัตขึ้นเสวยราชสมบัติในกรุงพาราณสีสืบต่อไป
